In 2006 her pregnant mother nearly died in a suicide bombing, as a result Maryam was born with severe hypotonic cerebral palsy. She is unable to speak, walk or feed herself. In 2014 she was injured again when an Israeli rocket hit their house. The warning issued before the rocket attack did not provide enough time for Maryams family to flee in light of her mobility restrictions.
