Most likely a mourning piece it could be used as a scarf or lace pin. It is made from Whitby Jet and is an ellipse shaped bar brooch carved with a geometric design. It has a brass c pin fastener to the reverse. Condition: Good used condition overall with age commensurate wear and signs of use, surface wear and scratches.
