The Thureophoroi were so named for the distinctive oval shield they carried called the thureos. Both Thracian and Illyrian infantry adopted the shield before the Greeks, one theory being that it was introduced by Pyrrhus of Epirus, whose Roman enemies and Italian tribal allies used
